"S.T.3 Forest: Field of Love" Statement of purpose

Ever since the ancient era of "Joumon" (B.C.10000-B.C.300), the hearts and souls of the Japanese have been growing in the forest. People have developed the energetic and robust constitution, on the land filled with vitality. The forest is life itself that has brought up human beings, and is the root of culture.

The modem society has been established, as the forest, as important as life of each individual, has been destroyed to the extreme extent. The destruction of the forest is now witnessed everywhere in the world. We are living in what we call "System of Destruction" where we build an affluent society but inevitably a poor society as well. It is evident that our Earth will eventually be ruined if this system persists. Namely, it is a fact that we are depriving our children of the future and asking for their sacrifice, in order to live today.

We find it truly imperative for every one of us to recognize this serious situation and take a step ahead to build a vital future on "Love and Peace". At the same time, we must work closely together with the people in the world who have seriously tackled, considered and warned us about every issue on "Life" ever since they envisioned the current "catastrophic" situation a few decades ago.

Mr. Tadamitsu Saito began to play the piano improvisationally for himself at the age of 36, till when he had not been able to play it. Mr. Saito's piano sounds resonate deeply inside his own life, which responds back to his sounds and in turn creates new sounds. He stepped up experimental practices over and over again in which "Life and Sound" lively harmonize with each other and bring new energy to his life.

Mr. Saito, through his body, has responded to and communicated with human life and natural environment. By playing the piano, he finds new movement occurring inside himself, as if he gained new life, and communicates dynamically and directly with man and nature. His piano sounds spontaneously create dynamic energy in people's life to cultivate their lives, solve their own problems for themselves and become truly creative. One communication has led to another, and new energy to live has been born in many individuals. Namely, Mr. Saito has made "the Field of Love" a reality, where the new energy leads people to live a healthy and creative life.

In this period of dramatic changes, the world faces a huge number of problems such as the issue of "Global Environment". However, the period symbolized by great changes also represents the time when "New Life" for building our future is being born. We are convinced that it will bring us a true sense of happiness and new energy for our next generation if we recognize and experience this "New Life" being generated in each one of us.

It is our sincere wish that the destruction of the forest will be stopped as soon as possible. In this event, Mr. Saito will improvisationally express "Energy of Love" inherent in "New Life" being created in the life of each individual. This concert consists of Mr. Saito's piano solo, the joint performance between Mr. Saito (playing the piano) and Mr. Darol Anger, a prominent American violinist and "Hirosaki Neputa Taiko", a traditional Japanese drum performance.

We, the members of the S. T. 3 executive committee, intend to send our message, "Forest: Field of Love", all over the world including our country, and expect to receive messages from the world. We are motivated to make this concert an international event that will develop into new dynamic energy for the future.

Following is the message from Dr. Peter M. Senge, Director, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA

Thank you for your very kind invitation to share some thoughts as you prepare for your very important gathering on June 12. I am honored by the request, and humbled by not having any idea what I should say. I hope the following is appropriate.

I believe that humankind stands at an epochal crossroads. The way of being that has allowed us to climb to the top of the animal hierarchy leads forward into an abyss. We have gained unimaginable power in influencing our environment. Yet, it is this very power which now poses an unprecedented threat. All of the true crisis that we face in the world today are “systemic”, they have no simple causes, there is no one to blame, there is no villain to fight. They are a by-product of complex interdependencies, which we have collectively brought into being. For the first time in our history as a species we have the power to either advance or destroy the species.

There is another way forward, a way which few of us know from experience but many sense as a possibility. It is the way of love and compassion, based in a deep appreciation of the interdependence of all life. It is a way based upon rediscovering the “primacy of the whole”, the knowledge that who we are is inseparable from the web that interconnects all. This knowledge must permeate all of humankind’s institutions, especially those, which have the greatest impact on our present life, namely business, public education, and government. This knowledge must transform the way we shape policy and practice. It is too important to leave to intellectuals. It must become the work of practical women and men everywhere. I send you my heart and honor your efforts.
